How to Pass the Ontario G1 Test on Your First Try
Getting your G1 licence is the first step to driving in Ontario. The G1 knowledge test has two parts: 20 questions on road rules and 20 questions on traffic signs. You need at least 16 correct in each section to pass.
What's on the G1 Test?
The test covers four main areas:
Road Rules (20 questions) — Right-of-way, speed limits, lane changes, school zones, emergency vehicles, impaired driving laws, demerit points, and more.
Traffic Signs (20 questions) — Regulatory signs (stop, yield, speed limit), warning signs (curves, construction, pedestrian crossings), and informational signs (highway markers, service signs).
Study Strategy That Works
1. Read the Official Handbook — The MTO Driver's Handbook is the primary source for all G1 questions. Read it cover to cover at least once.
2. Practice with Real-Format Questions — Use TRY2PASS to drill with questions matching the actual G1 format. Start with a diagnostic test to find your weak areas.
3. Focus on Signs — Many first-time test-takers fail the signs section. Study the colour coding: red means stop/prohibition, yellow means warning, green means information/direction.
4. Learn the Numbers — Memorize key numbers: blood alcohol limits (0.00 for G1/G2, 0.08 for full licence), following distances, speed limits in school zones (40 km/h), and demerit point thresholds.
5. Take the Exam Simulator — Before your test day, do at least 3 full exam simulations under timed conditions. This builds confidence and reduces test anxiety.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing km/h with mph (Ontario uses metric) - Forgetting that G1 drivers cannot drive on 400-series highways without a fully licensed driver - Missing the "round-about" right-of-way rules - Not knowing the difference between solid and broken centre lines
Test Day Tips
- Arrive early and bring two pieces of ID (one with signature) - The test is multiple choice on a touchscreen computer - You can take the test in multiple languages - If you fail, you can retake it the same day (with a new fee)
Practice consistently with TRY2PASS's smart practice mode — it prioritizes questions you've gotten wrong before, so you study efficiently rather than reviewing what you already know.
